I'm going to try to keep a running tally of how much I get from my SFG, by weight. I'm sure a few things will be forgotten, but I'm going to try!  I've got a total of 58 sqft (two 4*4, two 3*3, and my tomato planter which we'll call 1*Cool

I don't weigh my produce, but do keep track of how many of each thing I pick.  For greens I just record small, med or large picking.

Tally of my year's garden haul Empty Re: Tally of my year's garden haul

Post  GloriaG 6/13/2013, 5:22 pm

Hi Amethyst42,

I've been keeping a tally by weight since I started my SFG a little over three years ago.   I did it partly because I wanted to know just how much produce I could expect from my garden, and secondly, I wanted a way to justify to myself that the benefit outweighed the initial cost.  (Which was pretty high in our case because we needed to landscape, mulch, etc. for the HOA where we live.)

Now that I've got a record, I find I really like having it.

From my records, I can look back to get an idea of how many more or less squares we need of certain vegetables. And, I can also see trends like; this year I'm down by about 10% from last year at this time.  (Probably due to inconsistent weather this spring.)

It should also help me see if my garden is improving - which I hope happens as the beds mature and I become more knowledgeable.  So I've set a "goal" for myself of about 2 1/4 pounds of produce per square from my 225 square feet.  (I'm not counting the 25 ft of asparagus yet because they won't start producing for another couple of years.)

I keep it simple - when I bring veggies in, I wash them, weigh them and jot the date, weight and produce name in a notebook I keep by the scale in the kitchen.  At the end of a month, I type the information into an Access database I wrote, although a simple Excel spreadsheet would work just fine for this.

I know that keeping records isn't for everyone, but FWIW, I find it beneficial.
This year's total as of June 5:  151 lbs

Good gardening,

That's quite a haul already! I'm in a different zone than you, so I'm not able to plant until much later, have to harvest sooner, and my haul is correspondingly smaller.
I'm using an Excel spreadsheet, as I just realized I can't go back and edit my post after a few minutes.

Yes - location, location, location.  Everyone's yield per square foot will be different. But, I do think the information you get from keeping a record will be helpful in the future.

Good luck,

I weighed my tomatoes last year, as I was curious, when I quit weighing I was over 300 lbs, so I was very happy.

Small diddy plants you buy in a garden centre / nursery or plant sale in the local market place etc. or at someone's garden gate  that have already been sown  several weeks ago and are now grown to three inches or so tall .

All you have to do is soak the tray /pot or bunch etc. of starts in a couple of inches of rain water or tap water if you have nowt else for an hour or so to give the plants a drink 7 loosen the stuff they are growing in then tease the plants apart & plant the individual plants into a bed and water them in .
