Deal of the Week Empty Deal of the Week

Post  nurzemjd 6/11/2013, 3:44 pm

I started this thread in hopes that we could pass on cost saving information to each other.

This past week we scored some pretty good deals. We found a DIG drip line kit in an unopened box at a garage sale for $5 (same at HD $30), and another opened box (not complete) in my father-in-law's garage for free. It took me a while, but I managed to set up the system in my big box all by myself, lol. The big box used up all of the DIG drip line, so we will have to try to figure out how to make the incomplete set work for the 2 smaller boxes. The other item we found really doesn't relate to the garden, but I am pretty excited about it, so I'll share, lol. We got a 12'x12' popup shelter for $15 at St Vincent De Paul's thrift store in Tacoma. There is a tear in the canopy, but I can fix that, lol; it sold new for about $270.

Checkout Craigslist in your area. CL has a "free" section. In March I got about 100 iris, lily, and blue bell bulbs/tubers for free! There is scrap lumber and palates to be had, and all sorts of stuff. One man's garbage, is another man's treasure!!

Don't forget that Lowe's, HD, and McClendon's will price match! In the past my family has gone around to see the prices for materials at all three and then gone to the store we prefer and say " this is what 'company x' charges, what can you do for me; often to get the item(s) for a little less than the least expensive store. Worst case is they say no, lol.

Great idea for a new thread! Thanks! I've been spending way too much and am feeling a bit guilty about it.

I'm on the verge of building either a composter or worm bin. I'm hesitant about the worm bin because I live in So Cal and it gets hot during the summer. I guess I can build it half underground with a shade cover. No way my wife would allow something like that in the house....so I'm looking for cheap materials.

We live in So. California also. We have a worm bin, and keep it on the back patio in the shade. No problems...so odor...people know even know it's there...do it!!

Wow nurzemjd, what a deal!  Lucky you!

It's pretty amazing, what you can find sometimes, at garage sales, online, etc..  There is one site, freecycle, that helps you recycle/upcycle things for free.  http://www.freecycle.org  And I remember watching a TED talk where someone mentioned several companies that help people either swap stuff, or give/find things.  I love that!  And there is always Goodwill and thrift stores.  I'll have to see if I can find those links so I can share them here.  Every little bit...  Very Happy

I'm getting a truckload of free wood chips delivered tomorrow or Friday.  So YAY.

I noticed this morning the forum had some changes.  Inside the reply box, click on the smiling emoticon:Deal of the Week Emotic10

It will open up this box with all of the emoticons to choose from:Deal of the Week Emotic11

They are really tiny but some of them get big enough to see well when you hover over them.
