I did that for my son the first year we grew them because he was so hopeful that he would get a pumpkin. He was two at the time. And I just couldn't let him be disappointed . We ended up getting 19 small jack be little pumpkin as my avatar show, good luck with your pumpkins!!!
Thanks! We do hit the garden every morning with our q-tips in hand, just in case any flowers are open. The problem last year was that we never had any female blossoms on the pumpkin.
This year, though, everything is growing much better, and it looks like we'll be in good shape unless we run into some unforeseen pumpkin pest when the fruit starts growing!
If you have a female flower that is going to open soon tape up a few of the male flowers so the maintain the pollen. Than once the female opens cut the male flower off the vine and cut petals off and pollinate that way. It has work for four years for us now.

Got my first male flower this morning, so I am glad I read this thread yesterday. So far, only females flowers with flailing fruits! So that male flower has work to do!

But the only one that has sprouted so far has died.
And since I have problems just growing a regular cucumber , I'd even be happy with a green one. Wish me luck.

I had to replant the white wonders this year. Little plants kept dying on me. Must have lost at least 10. I think I finally got 4 or 5 plants. Left 2 with my son, gave 1 to my daughter and I have 1 planted. Son called yesterday and said he has a babycuke on his.

Gosh, Kay, I only had about 10 seeds and none of the others have sprouted yet. Do they take a long time?

Seems like they took almost 1 week in the house. I had some seed left from last year and most sprouted but damped off. I actually had to reorder seed in April. Can't remember for sure, but I think they took about a week to sprout too. FYI, no soaking. If it stops raining, I'll go check on my plant and take a picture. They do taste great. My neighbor and my son loved them. My son requested extras this year. I only got to eat 1 last year before I left on my 2 month trip.

Definitely hoping to have success with at least one watermelon this year!
But really, the only thing I'm not looking forward to in the garden is fighting the bugs and drought.....bring on some fresh veggies and herbs though! Filled my plate with sugar snap peas to the point that hubby is concerned I'm going to turn into one.

As promised, pictures of my only White Wonder Cuke. Transplanted on 9 May as an 8" sproutling.
May 28 The one in the middle of the zuke planted from seed the same day (left) and a like size burpless on the right.
and here it is today. Burpless is ahead in growth and already has a 4" cuke on it.
White wonder is putting out flowers.

I'm growing Crenshaw melons, and really hoping that crazy Las vegas heat is exactly what they want!
I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks.

The cukes ànd the zuke are not covered. I moved the tulle over one square when they started blooming. But the rest of the bed has lettuce ànd turnip greens ànd is still covered. The picture was taken through tulle from the opposite side of the bed.

This is my first year gardening. I'm growing several things, but mostly focusing on tomatoes. The thing I'm most excited about is the Berkley Tie Dye tomato. I can't wait to try one!

This spring we built a greenhouse kit. The season is moving so fast that only one side has had a bed dug and filled and planted. I got people to be enthusiastic about helping me by promising lots of peppers and tomatoes and eggplant.
