Soil Very Hard on Top Layer Empty Soil Very Hard on Top Layer

Post  ttx599 Tue May 28, 2013 5:32 pm

I have noticed this year that the top layer of soil in my SFG is very hard and almost "crunchy" When I break through this top layer, it is the great loose Mel's Mix but the top is hardened. When I was watering this weekend, it took a few minutes for the water to be absorbed and drain through the top layer. I don't recall this ever happening before. Any ideas or suggestions?

Water well your mix then place a thin layer (1")of homemade compost on the top. this will act as a kind of mulch, retain moisture, allow air flow and I find make the top crustiness go away. Another thing you may do is simply cultivate the top layer periodically.

I've had that problem in the past with high dry temps and too much peat in the soilmix. Water it, mix in a little compost and as Camp says, layer a mulch.

Just so I understand correctly... add compost to the top to act as a mulch?
