We set up two 8x2 boxes for my daughters corn patch. We have Golden Bantam in there. We are starting to get some sprouts - yea!! We have cages built around them to keep birds and critters out and to let the corn grow up through for support when they get bigger.

My question is - in terms of pests - like ear worms (??) - what do I need to do as the plants get bigger to help keep the corn pest-free? And when should they be applied?
In the past we've ordered products from Garden Alive since their stuff is safe for pets/people. I don't want to go crazy with chemicals - especially pesticides - but I don't want pests or worms getting all our corn!!

Any other particular fertilizer I might want to consider? I know corn is a heavy feeder so that is why I put some composted/aged chicken poop in there when I made the mix to go in these two boxes.

Thanks!

One method is when the corn ears develop, smear a dab of mineral oil on the tip. I've only read about it, and haven't tried it myself.

I grow my corn in straight 5 way compost; the stuff that goes into my MM. Corn does just fine. (weather permitting!)

Planting early , you may beat the worms. You can also get corn that makes a tight ear that keeps worms out. Don't use anything on your corn until you know that the tassels have pollinated the silks, or you won't get corn anyway. Most of the corn worms only eat a couple kernals.

I volunteer at an organic/natural food co-op. The first time I received a delivery of corn, I checked the tips and found worms in a few. I brought it to the attention of the manager who said, 'That's how we know it is organic!'

We put the wormy ears in the discount bin; it's just a matter of slicing off an inch or so to have a perfectly good ear.
