Firsts in East TN -- for me at least Empty Firsts in East TN -- for me at least

Post  ETNRedClay 5/25/2013, 10:08 pm

Today I found my first squash blossom (crookneck) and the first baby cucumber (straight eight) and the first tomatillo.... wrapper? What do you call the papery part that goes around the fruit-to-be?

Anyway THRILLED. My lettuces are starting to be very strong so I'm eating big salads while I can. My strawberries are going nuts. My potato tower needs to be raised at least another board higher. And my blue lake bush beans have little white flowers (?) on them.

Remember that 80's song, I'm so excited! Well, hum along now, I'm so excited! I just can't hide it!

AND... a little bitty tomato hiding under a leaf.

Very dissapoiting white icicle radishes did NOTHING for weeks, and today when I checked, holy moly, they were standing above the ground 2 inches and when i pulled them -- I had to pull them -- they were 4 inches under ground. WOW! Taste good, too. I'm replanting!

My first squash blossom was joined by a dozen others overnight.

And my first cuke has a dozen or more neighbors.

My peppers are covered in tee-tiny blossoms, all varieties.

Note to self: Memorial Day thiings are happenin' in the veggie garden!

And wow, check out the Daddy Longlegs at the bottom of the squash fruit. Just noticed. Spiders are a sign of a healthy garden, right?

I got to looking at this EGGPLANT today and realized its leaves looked just like the PEPPER plants and NOT like the eggplant plants. I looked closer, checked the label BLACK BEAUTY EGGPLANT, checked the label on the remainer of the 3-pack it came out of SAME THING, and finally picked the EGGPLANT... and lo and behold it's a PEPPER!

I don't know what kind, sortuv sweet but not hot, and looks like a purple halapeno, but what do I know?

I'm the newbie, guys. Shaking my head at you old timers. Someone shoulda told me.

There is a Purple Beauty sweet pepper. I had them last year and they do taste great. And they add so much color to salads.

Hey, wait, I bought those. Mmm, why does the label say EGGPLANT? Now I gotta figure out where the eggplant went to....

THANKS! Learn something new every day.
