How much powdered milk and epson salt should or could I put on my tomatoes? Per tomato plant in 1 ft. sq. And per tomato plant in pots?

I put about 1/4 cup ( small handful) of each in the planting hole. One plant per at least every foot, But I have had better success with the paste tomatoes at every other square.

Camp my tomatoes are well along would you recommend top dressing(or making this a tea) to add this 'preemptively'. I am concerned by the sheer numbers of starts and blooms on my plants. Otherwise they seem vigorously healthy.

Just sprinkle it dry on the top of the Mel's Mix and lightly scratch it into the surface. That's all you need to do, no faffing about with teas at this point.

Just as an aside, It seems on nearly every tomato (except for cherry types) plant I have had in the last 5 years, the first fruits ALWAYS have BER and all the following fruit are generally fine. Keep the watering as needed, use mulch to retain moisture and don't overwater.

Thank you for your responses. I should have clarified at the beginning that the tomatoes themselves look good but the leaves on the potted ones are skinny and curled. The leaves on the toms in the MM boxes look better.

PS: my MM has only one compost for the 1/3, Kellogg's. I believe that next year with a multi-source compost added, everything will be so much bigger. It's just taking a while getting together items for composting.

milk - Tomato- how much powdered milk and epson salt? Empty How do these things help?

Post  Windmere 5/22/2013, 2:02 pm

Hi folks,

What benefit do powdered milk and epson provide? I'm sorry, I've been away for a while... may have missed a thread. My plants are going into "the ground" this weekend. I am also thinking of "trenching them."

Any tips with regard to the mild and salt would help Wink

Oh... and camp... what does "BER" mean?

I read the thread "Tomato Trouble" and found out that the powdered milk is for calcium. But I still don't know what the Epson salts are for. And... what is BER? It sounds scary! LOL

The "Each" is powdered milk and Epsom salts.

BER is Blossom End Rot.

Camp thanks for your help. I am just freaking out with the sheer numbers of starts and still more blossoms.

Thank you Pepper. There are so many factors affecting the success of gardening projects. I have to admit, it can be a bit overwhelming. Hopefully, I'll get at least one tomato salad out of this (LOL).
