Well its been such a lousy year so far weatherwise rusty skin was the likely outcome of the current late spring , I certainly didn't expect to get sunburn today ,but I have .

I spent four hours or so pottering around the garden planting out and in the greenhouse re potting things up .

Happily I managed to get a fair bit done ..I've put :-
Toms in the tubs in the glasshouse . 3 x beefsteak, 3x sungold & a single money maker incase the outside ones get blight again if it returns to a wet summer.
A special tom seet set from a friend is going to go in a tub on castore so it can be wheeled and and out the glasshouse onn the warmer days ( if any ) .

Potted on were :- 28 night scented stocks 9 ...only another 100 or so to do . Cool
2x courgettes , 3x apple cucumbers . 3 x perennial kale
Outside there are 6 sweet peas and six long trailing nasturtiums hardening off .

I managed to transplant into the square foot beds :- 6 dwarf curly kale , 8 collards .18 musselbugh leeks , 4 salad bowl lettuce , 9 globe beet roots , 6 cylinder beet roots .

A good friend who has an 8 cabined pleasure /leisure fishing boat is 50/50% Scott and Southern French. He's has given me some of his cooking & roasting garlic from his galley that he grows on his 600 hectare farm in South of France .

The bulbs were massive compared to what we can buy in the supermarkets etc. and it is proper garlic , not those elephant garlic onions floating around in ebay etc.

I now have something like 28 planted cloves of soft and hard neck garlics in the garden .
Garlic is a funny plant it likes a pH 7 to 7.5 and basically thrives on sun shine and neglect.

Over the years I've learnt from others and also first hand that if you take your own cloves off your own home grown bulbs it takes three generations ( three years ) to get the garlic normalised to your climate and soil and then you should start gettting some seriously good garlic that will store well .

It looks like I'll be wearing a floppy hat & some sun cream tomorrow while I'll be out in the greenhouse potting on zillions of other first true leaf seedlings .
Munchkin (11 yrs old ) has been helping me by making up the potting compost mixture and filling my potting on tubes , she said it was good to get out away from her iPod, iPad , computer and the TV.
I don't know if it is reverse psychology but I'm going to make the most of it whilst it lasts .

Wow you got an amazing amount of work done David! It feels good to me to get a little bit of a sunburn, but hopefully you didn't scorch yourself too much! I have a great farmer tan going on mostly my arms, lol. What a sweet daughter you have to help you and she is also learning so much! Keep that sunscreen and floppy hat on! I want to be trying my hand at garlic maybe this year and have read some threads on it but I didn't remember reading about the three year acclimation thing. So good to know!

Hi Dave, what a lovely day you had and so much accomplished! Time with your munchkin too - precious. Thanks for sharing. Hope the sunburn heals quickly.

Although you may want to confer with your doctor or pharmacist first, I know from personal experience (via my ex-husband) that Vitamin C can help a severe sunburn. The dose he had me take, though, was astronomical.

Hope your sunburn feels better soon. Aloe vera takes the sting out of it. If you dont have a plant (use the goo in the leaf) they do sell it near the sunscreen aisle.

You did an amazing amount of work! I usually retreat into the house and/or shade when it starts getting hot.

Had a really hot shower after posting last night and another this morning ..I've gone all nutty brown ( or is that just all nutty ? Laughing ) .
No sting of sunburn so today I've spent another five or so short sessions with Alison re building the pond surround as it has had two years to settle down after rthe landscaping /construction .

We've been setting up the pond with a full filter & UV algae killer ssystem , laying natural local rocks along the edge of the water fall and planting up in the area outside the pond so that in a few years it will look more naturalized .

Yes ..... I've gone a slightly light shade of almost copper bronze.

Plantoid,
Holy Moly, You are a tremendous worker! Typically my arthritis wears me out before I can get all my planned chores done. And it was delightful to hear of your little Muchkin helping you out. Sure wish sometimes I could turn back the hands of time and have my kids be young again and have sfg in my life too. It's lovely to read about you creating wonderful memories for her. Enjoy!

I bet your garden smells heavenly in the evening. I like plants that have a lovely perfume.
