What if I planted seeds too deep? Empty What if I planted seeds too deep?

My first SFG- My transplants seem to be fine, but most of the seeds I've planted have done nothing. I'm starting to think I planted them too deep- carrots, cilantro, snap peas, lettuce and watermelon we planted at least 10 days ago, and I see nothing. I might have planted some of them 2 inches deep. That's probably too deep, isn't it?

So any advice what to do? dig them up? scrape off the top inch of soil? just wait?

I think there is still a good possibility of your seeds popping up out of the ground. The general rule is to plant seeds 2-4 times the thickness of the seed as it is laying on it side. Mel says: You don't have to worry too much about placing your seed too deep, in part because your Mel's Mix is loose and friable. If the seed is placed too deep for the kind of seed it is, as soon as it begins to receive moisture, nature will tell it, 'Get going, buddy, put some roots down and start growing.' That sprout can push right up through Mel's Mix because there are a lot of nooks and crannies and the soil is very easy to move. This is one of the hidden advantages of starting with perfect soil. It almost guarantees that all of your seeds will grow into plants."

From what I found on my seed packets and/or other reading, carrots can take at least 21 days to germinate, cilantro can take 14-21 days to germinate, peas can take three weeks, lettuce depends on type and germinates in 6-24 days, watermelon can take up to 7-10 days. Carrot seeds are usually planted 1/8" deep, and peas 1/2" to give you an idea of depth. I haven't looked up the others. I would keep the soil moist continually and try to be patient and expect they will take longer because they have farther to grow through the MM.

There should be others along who can give their suggestions also. Let us know how it goes!

I would wait for everything but the lettuce, lettuce needs light to germinate so if you planted those 2 inches deep it probably won't sprout. When I plant my lettuce I put the seeds on top of the soil and just pat it in, don't bury it at all and that works for me!
