How much room for Tromboncino zucchini?

We love tromboncino and grow it instead of yellow squash.  You get so much more harvest than with the yellow.  

Mine are planted in a 1 x 6 box with a pvc pipe frame and cattle panel for the trellis.  The "rampicante" in the title means just what it says - rampant. The frame of my trellis is 6' pvc pipe and the plants have gone up, over the top & back down to the ground on the other side.


Here is my trellis.  We use pipe clamps and pvc pipe for the frame, then wire cattle panel wiring to the frame. 

We use the pipe clamps at the end of all boxes for crop rotation

Dixie, how many plants are in the 6' box?

Capecoddess, I have 8 plants.  I have chickens and make manure tea from the poop and use as fertilizer every week. 

For my manure tea, I just put a shovel full in a 5 gallon bucket, add a handful of pelletized agricultural lime (otherwise it is too much nitrogen & plants will turn yellow) and fill with water let set a couple of days at least, the longer the better when using fresh manure, but with aged manure it doesn't matter as much.  The lime will settle, so give it a stir before using it.

I cut the bottom out of a gallon jug, leave the handle and lid in place, & use that to dip the tea into another 5 gallon bucket & add water til it looks like weak tea.  Just replenish the original bucket with water.  I usually only have to replace the manure once a season.  I also fix a new bucket in the fall so it will have time to age before spring.

IT WILL STINK when you stir it, but the odor dies down quickly.  If you have nearby neighbors, just pretend you have no idea where that smell came from

My first (and only) tromboncino. It's in a 3 gallon container, running amok in the Salad Bar (about 6' long now). It got a very late start, and is just starting to produce. I'm hoping it can survive a few nights in the low 40s. Then we'll have another week of 50s before we have to bring it in. I plan to put it in the greenhouse for the winter. with such a good start, fingers crossed it will survive under artificial light and continue to thrive over the winter.


It has 2 beautiful babies right now, about 5-6" long.

Are there also male flowers? Don't forget that if you bring it indoors, you will have to hand pollinate.

Funniest thing, the male flowers haven't opened yet, but the squash are already forming. My other squashes form a gazillion males before the first female shows up. Thanks for the reminder about hand pollinating. Every year I forget, but you always remind me.
