Hello from Long Island, New York
Hi to all! I am trying square foot gardening for the first time this year. Just planted two 4x7 raised beds today. Have had successful vegetable gardens in the past but was very intrigued with this method and decided to give it a go. Am anxious to learn from all...am trying to soak in as much as possible to have a great garden this year.

question on watering
My first question concerns watering of my two 4x7x 1.5 feet raised beds. I had purchased two soaker hoses which I thought I would place around the perimeter of the beds and thru the middle. My husband was going to hook them up to an outside water spicket for the convenience of just flipping a lever and watering for as long as needed. Do you think this method will work well? Do you think the positioning will be sufficient or is it "overkill" for the size of the beds?
My 2nd question relates to fertilizing. My first mistake (hopefully not fatal) was not reading Mel's book before starting. I found some info online and followed that, so my soil composition is 60/40 compost to topsoil. Do I need to fertilize during the season? If yes, suggestions for what to use? (BTW I am purchasing Mel's book online, tonight. Guess I put the cart before the horse.)
