Mushrooms in the garden?? Empty Mushrooms in the garden??

Post  kylansgirl 5/13/2013, 10:59 am

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post but I have mushrooms all over my garden! We live in Kansas so the weather has been up and down, having the gardens covered with plastic but in the full sun the next day. I try not to over water either. My question to you guys is are the mushrooms bad? I panicked and picked them all out but there were quite a few around my snap peas and carrots and lettuce. I found them growing out from underneath my grid in the strawberry box too. Are they beneficial or should I pick them all out? They were smaller and shoot up really tall. I can get pictures if that matters. Thanks!!!

You very likely used a mushroom or forest compost...this is normal after a rainy spell. I freaked out the first year I put my MM together and had TONS of mushrooms too. They shriveled under the afternoon sun and when it dried out a bit. I don't think any of them came back the next year. Nothing to worry about. Smile

Mushrooms are everywhere, they come and go. Just don't eat them. They won't hurt your garden.

I consider such mushrooms to be a compost addition.

A lot of compost mixes and potting soils now come with mycorrhizae inoculates in them. Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of this. It means you have a bio-active compost in there. The reason they do this is that we have been finding out how beneficial these symbiotic relationships are between plants and fungi.

These mushrooms are growing under a large evergreen tree on my neighbour's front lawn. I think the tree may be reaching end of life.  The tape measure is extended to 12 inches to give an idea of the size of the mushrooms.

What awesome huge mushrooms! I'd guess they are in the agaricus group.
There are certainly fungi that kill trees, but mushrooms don't always mean a tree is dying - or that the fungus is responsible. There are a number of mushrooms that are the fruit of mycorrhizae - fungi that help plants. If the tree is looking sickly, it's possible these mushrooms are an effect (eating the wood after it dies), rather than a cause.
