First asparagus of the season
Woo hoo! Spring is now well and truly here. I was away from home for two weeks and came home to the first of this year's asparagus harvest. I took all that had come up, even those over-sized, almost tree-like stems. Trimmed all, grilled with salt and pepper and a spritz of olive oil. It was wonderful!

Congratulations! I have to wait till next year for some pickings.
Mine are tall and skinny. Spent time yesterday rigging up elevated horizontal rope to keep them from laying down in 35mph winds. Darn that soft mels mix!

That is awesome on the harvest, I can't wait until next year when I can do some cutting for the table.
Hey LM, I had to get creative and run some horizontal support for mine a couple of days ago, they were laying all over the place from the winds.

Bob, I see you had 'the winds' too? Already had 4 ft tall chicken wire and posts around the box to keep out the cats so it was just a matter of adding some ropes for support. The goal was to prevent my fear of spears snapping off. Have no idea what that kind of long term damage would do. And it worked I guess, today the spears are still leaning a little but fully intact. How did yours make out? Are they broken??

Nope... none broken, but the tops were nearly laying on the ground. Since my wind always comes from the same direction and I planted mine in 2 rows. I was able to simply put a bamboo cane at both ends of each row and run a jute string down each row about 15" up the poles from the ground. Now the stalks have something to lean on when the winds blow and not do a nose dive. Time will tell if it is a permanent fix or not, but for now it appears to be working quite well.
Hope all is going well for you in the MG venture.

Re: First asparagus of the season
That's good news your spears didn't break either .
Some quick thoughts (hijacking, oh no!) The MG venture is good, went fast, two more classes and its over already. Reminds me of some college courses where you cover loads of material but its all surface knowledge and doesn't go deep enough. There are plenty of opportunities to learn more so this is just the beginning. Haven't heard you mention chickens or worms lately, hope all your new kids are good? Maybe we should pm or you can tell us on a new thread?
