Asparagus in Minnesota
Having only 1 year of experience with asparagus - planted one last spring - mine is not coming up. Is this normal for our zone? If not, bummer if I have to replace it.

Re: Asparagus in Minnesota
I'll guess given the weather this year, yes. I'm in southern Wisconsin and mine has just been really coming up for a week or so now. I know you guys have had much more cold and snow than we have. Soil temperatures are the key driver for asparagus emergence--soil temps at or above 50F will get them going. I use a digital kitchen thermometer to take occasional soil temperature readings at a few inches depth.

Think I'll give it another bit of time. Yes, you are quite a bit south compared to me. Thanks.

Re: Asparagus in Minnesota
I am in SD zone 4, and my asparagus has not made a showing yet either. This is the 3rd year for my bed, so I should be able to get a good harvest this year, but so far not a sighting!

Re: Asparagus in Minnesota
I just pulled aside the 4" of leaves that blew into my asparagus bed before snowfall this winter. In just one spot I found 3 little stems. There is hope!

Re: Asparagus in Minnesota
Having never planted it and reading other comments in other threads, I think I may have to move this. I had no idea that it needed way more depth. Wonder if I were to remove the weed cloth that it would maybe find its way deeper without me having to move it. What do you think?

Asparagus tips
Hi, Greatgranny - I don't know about asparagus "finding its way deeper" - the roots tend to climb to the surface over time. Watch what happens after you have a good rain, followed by 70+ degree days... your asparagus should shoot up like crazy. That's the magic combination, until then you'll have sporadic sprouting. Good luck!
Re: Asparagus in Minnesota
I think we are to get a good rain in a couple of days. We are having a warm up finally.
