Laying down tomatoes when planting Empty Laying down tomatoes when planting

Post  SalsaMom 5/9/2013, 10:25 am

I'm just now ready to put out tomato plants (late but we've had weird weather)...I bought some yesterday that are about 10" tall already - nice looking happy plants.
I am looking at Mel's book about laying the plants into the soil at an angle. Makes sense.
Is "laying them down" ok to do even with these bigger plants? Seems like it would be a bit easier to do with seedlings....but I figured unless there was some reason not to - I'd give it a go with these bigger plants.

Thanks!

I had a head-slapping moment after watching this video. So simple. You only need one extra day.

AWESOME!
I'll go get my 'maters out now and tip them over....I still have to mix more soil for the box they are going in - so this will give me something to do in the garden today.

Thank you!

Thank you for posting that video. It's however a little to late for me this year but I will remember it for next year. I planted mine on the side, but they just aren't doing to well at the moment. I'm hoping I did not shock them to much when transplanting. Thanks again for posting this video!

Lavender Debs,

Wow! What an extremely helpful video! Thanks so much for posting that. My wife and I watched it together and we both exclaimed, "Wow, how smart, how simple." It really is one of those "Why didn't I think of that first" type things.

Thanks again!

I grew all of my plants from seeds this year and decided to try planting my tomatoes this way this year. I have to admit it was a little disappointing at first- they were so tall and beautiful when they were still in their pots and looked so little after I planted them! That has been about a month, and my father-in-law and I are amazed at how much better these tomato plants are doing than ones we're used to growing! The main stalks are HUGE and were able to stand up to some pretty strong winds we had shortly after they were planted (about 10 mph sustained with gusts close to 30 mph). I have about 6 different varieties, so it has to be the way they are planted. Depending upon the variety, they are all 3'-4' tall and beautiful! My Big Beef has over 15 beautiful tomatoes on it- with more blooms at the top. Won't plant tomatoes any other way again!

The guy in that video, has a bunch of really good videos... A lot of them are about hydroponics... Some of his tomato plants grown with hydroponics are HUGE!! It is amazing.
