hardware cloth cutting suggestions? Empty hardware cloth cutting suggestions?

Post  JustMe 4/28/2013, 3:45 pm

We have voles. I am in the process of emptying out the raised beds and adding hardware cloth to the bottom of the boxes.

I have 2 - 4'x8' boxes, 1 - 4'x4' box and 1 roll of 4'x25' hardware cloth. The boxes are more like 4'3" x 8' and 4'4" x 4'4".

I will have to purchase 3' wide hardware cloth for my smaller boxes.

The solution I keep coming up with are to cut 2 pieces of 4'x4'9" cloth and 1 piece of 3'x4'9" cloth to cover the bottom of the 4x8 box. The extra 6" is for overage, which I've seen suggested here.

Is there a better cutting solution to minimize seams and not waste the hardware cloth?

JustMe,

It's not clear if 4'3" is inside dimension or outside dimension. Can you buy some 1x2 lumber and screw it inside along the bottom edge to give you a ledge to attach the hardware wire? That's what I did. Pictures of me building my last beds are here. The hardware cloth was attached with 3/4" galvanized poultry net staples.

The measurements are outside dimensions. Thank you for the visuals. I like the bottom rail that you added to your box.
