In my alley there's about 2 1/2 feet of soil between the fence and the ruts from the trash truck. I was thinking of either planting some really tall sunflowers or corn back there so I went out tonight and started hoeing the weeds and whatnot.

The middle of the alley where the trash trucks drive has the habit of getting a little swampy and making big ruts so they come in from time to time, throw down caliche and then grade it. While hoeing I found out that this caliche has been squashed into that soil that I want to plant in.

It's not like it's totally caliche, but when I'd dig down pretty deep to get a big root, I was definitely pulling up some caliche.

So knowing this about the soil, what do you think would be the best option for the alley?

1.) plant sunflowers

2.) plant corn

3.) just leave it alone

I vote for sunflowers!
They grow wild on roadsides, so they probably can take the heavy mineral content of the caliche... and besides.... they're pretty!

That's kinda what I was thinking. I have some skyscraper sunflower seeds that are supposed to get 12' tall (I'll believe it when I see it) and our fence is 7' tall so I thought I'd put them in the alley so we could see them over the fence.

I figure corn is a little more picky on soil and is water intensive so trying sunflowers wouldn't hurt to try. I just really hate to give up that space for something that isn't going into the freezer for winter!
