How do I get rid of nematodes?
I'm new here. Just logged in today. Live in Gainesville, Florida and had 3 raised bed gardens installed last summer. Was just out harvesting my carrots and they are UGLY. After doing some research it appears that they have been inflicted with nematodes. How do I rid my bed of these before planting something else. I already put some starts in that same bed (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant) and am wondering if they will be affected by this. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: How do I get rid of nematodes?
Welcome tot he forums Rach59 it all depends there are good nematodes and there are bad nematodes post up a picture if you can. If they are the bad type the easies fastes solution would be to scrap the soil and start over they will most deffinatly affect the transplants you put in. here is a link for the university of Florida that should help you out http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ng005 good luck. be sure to stop by yourr egional froum to meet people in your area and hardiness zone

Re: How do I get rid of nematodes?
Thanks for the reply Choksaw. Great article from UF. I had just covered my bed with black plastic, but see that I need to use clear instead, guess a trip to the local hardware store is on my list of things to do. The carrots were "knotty" and some had a very hairy appearance to them. Some carrots were unaffected, others were almost comical looking. Do you know if they are safe to eat if they have these worms?

Found this on ehow:
Soil Treatments

Soil Treatments
1
Apply neem oil to the surface of
the soil, then till it into the earth. This has been said to cut down
on the number of nematodes infesting your soil.
2
Till sawdust into the soil to reduce nematode infestation.
3
Add crushed sesame seeds or sesame seed oil to the soil and till it in to reduce nematodes in the soil.
4
Mix 1/2 cup of sugar into one
gallon of warm water and pour it directly onto the root area of your
plants. You may also treat soil with this method before planting.
5
Apply aged compost to your
garden. Aged compost introduces bacteria and fungi into the soil that
helps build a protective barrier around the root system, keeping
nematodes at bay.

JaneMim on your first post to the forums.
So happy you are still alive after eating the carrots.

nematodes
I got nematodes this spring, it was my first yr. with new mm, over ground that had never been used before. There is my thread here. https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t8479-green-beans-what-is-going-on
I got some of the fertilizer to use(don't need with Mel's mix, but will use for the nematodes) It is organic.
soil solarization- cover beds with plastic and heat it to cook the soil.
plant marigolds. Evidently has properties that nematodes don't like.
Veggies are ok to eat, but will be stunted.
Changing the soil won't help unless you put in table top beds, because the nematodes come from the ground under the beds, not from the Mel's mix.
I hope that the rest of your garden did well. My carrots were unaffected, just had the nematodes in the bed with green beans, and those were tasty anyway.
