Lettuce sprouts in 2 days! Empty Lettuce sprouts in 2 days!

Post  edfhinton 3/25/2013, 10:37 pm

With all I've read about germination time for lettuce and issues some have had, I am pleasantly surprised to have my first lettuce sprouts starting 2 days after sowing inside. Usual moistening of the soilless mix. Then I firmed the mix a bit and just pressed the lettuce seeds firmly into the surface, but not covered, placed them under the grow lights, and covered with plastic wrap.

That was Saturday and today I am seeing some sprouts so I have removed the wrap and will see how it goes. If it continues well, then I know to do the same when I start the second and third batches the next two Saturdays.

I wonder, once seeds start to sprout, should I cover them with a very thin layer of mix, or just leave them be to grow downward into it?

Crossing my fingers.

No need to cover with soil mix. Those little roots will burrow down.

Depending on what nutrients are in the mix and how long you have to wait to transplant to garden, you may need some very weak fertilizer at some point.

Thanks. I also noticed the little sprouting roots looks fuzzy as they head down into the mix, like little tiny hairs growing out of them. Is that how the root of lettuce sprouts should look? The mix is moist but not wet, so hasn't needed it's first bottom-watering yet, but before the seeds sprouted, when the plastic wrap was still over it (removed when sprouts started), there had been a LOT of condensation under the wrap. Nothing growing on the soil mix (other than my seeds), so I'm hoping it's just that lettuce sprout roots are a bit hairy. (I would take a picture, but the tin hairs areso small I doubt my cellphone camera would pick it up.)

Thanks,

-Ed
