My husband and I just planted veggies and herbs in our garden. We have set up a drip system with emitters every 6 inches that have a flow rate of 1/2 gallon per hour. We live in San Diego. How often and how long should we water our garden?

Hello Alexis! Welcome to SFG and the Forums. How much to water my new garden? 61949

I cannot tell you for sure how much water you will need in San Diego as I live in Northern Ohio How much to water my new garden? Icon_smile . However, according to Mel's book if the soil is prepared as he recommends and you have good drainage underneath, you cannot overwater. The soil is like a sponge, when it is full the rest of the water just drains off.

My thought would be to experiment until the soil is saturated, then back off until it remains the way the plant in the square requires. Some things like to dry out a bit and others like more water. Some want water at certain times of growth.

I'm sure some one from your area will chime in here and give you more help for your climate than I can.

Best of luck with your garden. Keep coming back to the forums. There's soooo much good information here.

How much to water my new garden? Empty Watering in San Diego

Post  Shirley Q 4/24/2010, 1:59 am

Hi I am in Oceanside and I have 3 2x2 raised beds for the moment and I use about 2 gals of water 2 to 3 times a week. A lot depends on how our weather is. With the rain we have had I only watered once this week but a few weeks ago I was watering every other day.
