Hi
After having lost several carnation plants to unknown factors, I dug up my remaining plants and planted them in pots to protect them and then replanted the pots in the greenhouse. After a while the plants again wilted and when I pulled them up they were again without roots. I then discovered these hard bodied worms at the the bottom of the pots. I dont think this is wire worms because they should only have three pairs of legs. Any ideas??? https://servimg.com/view/18118363/6

Ugh! I love carnations and other dianthus and have had troubles with wire worms too. I agree and what you post looks nothing like a wire worm, more like a millipede.

It may just be coincidental that the millipede was in the pot and that the carnation was actually suffering from something else related to the previous wire worm infestation, a virus or rot of some sort. This is pure speculation on my part. I will look around the internet later. If you find some info on the web, do please get back to us with what you find.

It could be many reasons .

Are you using the , " All New Square Foot Gardening " method and using Mels Mix to grow and pot things in ?

I have a whole greenhouse with many carnations and I found a single worm in at least 6 out of 10 pots also last year a few of my young statice plants died and also there I found a worm under 2 of the plants.

Pn, we are not really a general garden forum, our focus is on promoting the Square Foot Gardening method of gardening. I suspect you could teach us all a lot about growing carnations. For absolute answers to your questions regarding the demise of your carnations and what the millipede in the pot was, I suggest you may find them at your local university. Sorry, that's the best I can do here.
