Post  I'm a Soil Man 2/12/2013, 9:20 am

Hi,

I have just moved to a new place with a yard (finally) in Rockville, MD. Unfortunately I do not have any good soil ready for my new raised beds that I plan to start soon. Any good advice on cost saving tips for organic soil? I am planning to use concrete blocks. Any suggestions for where to get them cheap other than Home Depot?

I appreciate any help in advance and am quite excited about getting started. I haven't had a garden since I made one in tribute to my grandfather the year after he died when I was 13.

Cheers,

welcome Have yo read the All New Squarefoot Gardening book?

Craigslist is the place to look for both the blocks (or other bed building materials) and composts or aged manures. Check the Vermiculite database (from the home page) for sources.

Mel's Mix is the best to start fresh with.

Welcome to the forum.
If your beds are 12" deep and you don't want to pay for Mel's Mix for all of it, buy some garden loam by the yard. Fill the bottom 6" with the loam and then just fill the top 6" with your Mel's Mix. Six inches of Mel's is all that's really needed. Good luck.
