Hello to all SFGers. I have been dabbling in SFG since Mel first came out with his original series on PBS many years ago.

We (my wife, who will share this ID, and I) have a 100 Square Foot Garden (50 x 2) that has been very good to us for almost 30 years. It is the old method of in-the-ground square foot gardening. Too much time and money has been put in this patch to give it up, as it is a good 18 inches deep in rich loam.

We have two 4 x 4 foot herb gardens as well, and we have a 7 foot by 3 foot rock garden that is 2 feet deep with pure compost.

This year, we are adding our first above-the-ground 4 x 4 foot plot with the new Mel's Mix. I am anxious to see the results.

Earlier this month, we watched a Youtube video with an organic garden expert talking about a self-watering container called, "Growums," which were being closed out for $9.99 at Lowe's.

The boxes came with coconut coir that would cost more than $9.99 by themselves.

The expert used just one-third of the coconut coir with one-third coarse vermiculite and one-third compost and referred to this as the SFG mix. He added Azomite as well, which we use too.

So, we went around to all the Lowe's within 50 miles of us and bought out all that were left--13 in all. We plan doing the same as the expert, using Mel's Mix in these. They are 2 square feet each, so that gives us another 26 SF.

We have a unique anomaly here at our house. The shade temperature where we live consistently stays 5 to 7 degrees warmer than the temperature 250 feet away. It is great because it moves us one zone warmer than most of our city. Of course, when it is 110 degrees, it is not so nice.

We look forward to learning and sharing ideas with others here. This week begins our indoor seed-starting, and we are pumped to have a great harvest this year.
