Good thread
I wish I had seen this posting before I had gone to get the braces for my box. Went with two friends of my husband who each had very different views of how the boxes should be joined. In the end we got screws to connect the way Mel's video shows. But then the friend who assembled it hammered the screws in instead of screwing them. Glad the boxes are done, but I question the stability of the boxes, since they 'wiggle'.
In any event, we have filled up Mel's mix into 3 of the 7 boxes we're making. Planted some seeds today.

Here is my suggestion for rectifying " Hammer Mans " efforts .
Take one screw out of each corner at a time and inject some sort of expanding water proof wood glue in the screw hole . Gently reinsert the screw after dipping it in some melted candle wax and shaking off the excess ,the expanding glue will soak into the wood as it dries , the next day try to fully tighten the screw a wee bit more ...it will slide in the candle wax along the newly cast thread form , you should have a much better anchor with which to pull the wood together.
A couple of days later do the other screws in the boxes in the same manner
