Sacrificial Pumpkins? Empty Sacrificial Pumpkins?

Post  Weedless_ 1/22/2013, 6:55 pm

I have two perfectly good pumpkins stuck around since Halloween.
I am thinking of throwing them into the very back of my yard, far away from SFG boxes, to attract borers and squash bugs, and hopefully distract them from other cucurbitae I am planning to seed. I know that borers at least prefer pumpkin to other cucurbits. Has anyone tried that, and if so, did it work?

why not eat them, I still have a few from last fall, they do last for months.
I have taken all the ones I do not want to eat, and given them to the worms, my worm farm LOVES squash especially winter squash.

But with regards to your question, I wonder if you might attract more to your yard. I guess I always thought it was the stems that they went for...?

I can't even look at them. Last year I was trying to be practical and roasted all the pumpkins, and froze them in quart bags. I still have some in the freezer. I was cooking them into a porridge, among other things... I wasn't thinking that bugs would like the pumpkins themselves, I was just going to chop them open and let the nature take its course and have them sprouted. And should any survive, borers would just devour them.
