Hello from the SD/WY border!
Just moved back home to the Black Hills after living in SoCa over 20yrs. Just starting to get use to the cold again, kind of! Not much of a green thumb but excited to give it a shot. Need all the help I can get. Already started my compost pile. Not sure if I'm doing it right but have lots of horse, pig manure, lawn/flower garden trimmings & kitchen scraps. How to manage everything with the different seasons will be a challenge for this newbie, winter being the biggest but that comes with no suprise!

savvy66. Can't chat now as I am off to bed, it is past 11pm here in British Columbia, and I expect everyone else in the world has gone to bed except Australia and places around there.
You will gert some more responses in a few hours time.

Hi there and welcome
You need more carbon like leaves, straw, hay, even torn up cardboard, paper, etc. Pigs are omnivores, its generally thought to stick with animals that are herbivores.
You can go to the white search box above and left, put in compost and find loads of forum info. In Mel's book there is a streamlined explanation on building a compost heap. It does not need to be complicated. The book is, All New Square Foot Gardening, by Mel Barholomew. Loads of great info!
You can purchase it from the Website. Look above in the green task bar, at a reduced price. Again Welcome!

Re: Hello from the SD/WY border!
Welcome to the forum Savvy.
Like you, we in Maine have long, cold winters with no garden activity. You'll learn lots from others like me starting in late winter when we start our seeds indoors and then onward. We enjoy our gardening.
As for composting, I agree with adding lots of browns. You need lots more. Tear up newspaper or shred it if you have to, and egg cartons and cardboard boxes if you don't have enough leaves, but add lots of browns to make good compost. Good luck

I'm also new, but since I'm in sunny California, I won't have much to help out with, LOL! Keep warm :-)

Welcome from the SD/ND/MN border! We are getting our first real snow of the season and counting down until I can start seeds indoors!

Re: Hello from the SD/WY border!
Welcome Savvy! I grew up in Southern California and moved to Utah about 24 years ago. I agree with Llama Momma that you need more carbons and would go with what she mentioned. Now may be a great time to get your leaves. I am also concerned about the pig manure. You are right to start building your compost pile. There is a second edition of the All New Square Foot Gardening book that is being released in February. If you don't have your book yet, you may want to wait to get the second edition, but that is just me. I know a lot of libraries have the All New Square Foot Gardening book that can be checked out in the meantime. You can get lots of studying and planning done during your long Winter. Have fun!

Welcome Savvy! I am a Black Hills native. Starting to learn about square foot gardening this early in the winter will have you soooo excited come springtime! I love this forum and there are always helpful gardeners with tons of experience to help along the way! Way to go getting a jump on your compost pile too! That will certainly come in very handy this spring! You'll have lots of fun reading and planning for it and you can start a lot earlier than most think if you plant the right veggies come spring!
