Fall Garden Harvest

Well it is December, but it is 79 degrees outside here in Baton Rouge, LA! Gotta love LA weather. My fall garden is coming along nicely. The fall tomatoes are getting bigger, the broccoli heads are really nice, but my Brussels Sprouts are still small Sad

. I will plant some carrots and lettuces soon and maybe something else for cooler weather. Here is a picture of my broccoli head that is almost 12 inches across!

Thanks for the complaments. My wife made broccoli salad with 1/2 and tonight we are cooking some in a skillet with olive oil, minced garlic, salt and pepper as a side dish. Fresh vegies from the garden just can't be beat.

Thanks for posting that lovely photo. We in the north thrive on your fall gardens in the south where crops are still growing. Love it.
Indeed, the cole crops like cabbage, broccoli, etc seem to grow better in the fall since there are fewer insects to destroy them and they thrive in cooler weather. Keep up the good work.
As for Brussels sprouts, they take a a long time to grow and produce well.

I have a number of hoop houses for my fall vegetables. But when the weather got down to 25* the hoop houses would not stay warm enough for my end of season tomatoes. So I put them on a wagon and roll them into the garage every night. It seems to be working because I have about 5-7 tomatoes slowly turning color. The one last tomato plant under a hoop house is just sitting there doing nothing. I even went out to the garden in the middle of the night and turned a small heater on for an hour trying to keep them warm.

Rolling them into the garage at night rather than covering and uncovering everyday sure is a lot easier and works better. Nights may get down below 30* and days get up to 70*.

No, they are not weeds. This is an experiment. Two of the three pots were mulched with wheat straw. The pretty green growth is wheat. I am trying to see if it dies when it gets cold or when it gets hot. The third pot is mulched with shredded leaves. No pretty green growth in that pot. SOOOOOO the conclusion is to use leaves as mulch if you do not want any pretty green growth in the pot. Think of it as nice tender green nitrogen for the compost pile, not weeds, never weeds in my garden. But maybe wheat growing.

(for the uninitiated, that's Cajun-speak for Let the good times -and 'maters- roll! ;-) ) Graduated from USL (now UL, Lafayette) many moons ago and lived up north of BR for a few years before being transplanted to Central Florida. Met up with a fella from NOLA who plays at a local Cajun joint down the road, Neon Leon's Zydeco Steakhouse, believe it or not! It's owned by family members of Leon Wilkeson from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Next best thing to being there Very Happy

Break out the scrub board and the zydeco and do the cajun jitterbug all over the place! aaaaaa eeeeee! :-) A friend from Monroe told me this morning it was snowing there. He said if you run your heater and your air conditioner in the same 12 hours, you must be from Louisiana! Let 'em roll! cheers...elwo
