Pressure Cooker Woes Empty Pressure Cooker Woes

So our brand spankin new Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry 21.5 qt pressure cooker/canner arrived today from Amazon (with free shipping even!) and we were so excited... until we saw the giant print on the top of the box which was NOWHERE to be found on the amazon page.

DO NOT USE ON FLAT, CERAMIC, GLASS, ELECTRIC COOK TOPS

Well that's just great - that's what we have! I did some search on the subject and it sounds like the problem is that the weight can break the glass top, and the canner is bigger than the burner usually, which means that the area outside the burner (like countertops) could be damaged.

The shipping to send this big honkin' thing bag would cost a ton I assume so I'm trying to figure out a solution. I have a side burner on my outdoor grill, but I don't know if that will support the weight either.

After we finished our first year of canning, our electric coil, old school, range top enamel was damaged by the excessive heat of the overhanging cooker. I ended up building a cook station out in my shop for canning. We love it. Two propane burners from Nothern Tool connected to one tank. We can leave stuff set up all the time inbetween canning sessions. Mess up the floor? Not a problem on concrete.

Actually, there are a lot of folks who do their canning on the picnic table. If nothing else, it's a lot cooler and more room to spread out.

Thinking of getting a turkey fryer that you hook up to a propane tank and do it outside. At least then if it blows up, the junk isn't all over the kitchen. Pressure Cooker Woes Icon_biggrin

(It even discusses a gas-burner strong enough to boil water in a 55-gallon drum in case you want to get rid of your MIL, but I don't think we need one of those at our house. I don't want to give my sons-in-law ideas.)

We also have an old electric coil-top range which I have damaged by using my pressure cooker (and large stock pots). There is a special kind of burner with a raised coil which can be inserted into the large burner plug on many models. It keeps the outer bottom of the large pots from coming into contact with the stove top. The burner I saw cost about $40, but I didn't do any comparison shopping. I have not tried it.

That's a bummer. I heard that in olden days when "everybody" canned their food, most people had a second stove in their garage so that the house wouldn't be unbearably hot. I suppose you could buy a cheap second stove and put it in your garage, but I'm guessing that would be more than shipping the pressure cooker back.
