Hi,
We're in Modesto just a few miles north of you and we're considered Zone 9b.
I just checked again and you can click on this link for the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone map for 2012 to be sure.

Each month I try to post what we can plant in our area and last month I posted this:

Horseradish Plant root pieces.
Harvest from April.

We haven't tried planting horseradish but I think I'd like to. Al's not crazy about the idea. We'll see how that goes!
Hope this helps, and if you have a chance take a look at our Apollo Garden ... we're pretty proud of this place!
happy hi

I was thinking of ordering some Horseradish Roots .... My great-great-aunt told me to plant Horseradish near Potatoes to control the pests. I would like to get Horseradish well established so I won't need to replant every year ....

In my Sunset New Western Garden Book Modesto, California is shown in the southeastern-most end of Climate Zone #14, very close to Climate Zone #8. We are in the middle of Modesto and Turlock, in Climate Zone #8.

I guess the classification of Zones differs (Climate Zones, Growing Zones, Hardiness Zones).

Modesto is right on the border of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 9a and 9b. We are in Zone 9a (Ceres, California):

http://www.plantmaps.com/interactive-california-usda-plant-zone-hardiness-map.php

This map has us in Climate Zone #14:

http://www.sunset.com/garden/climate-zones/climate-zone-central-california-00418000067179/

This map appears to place us in Zone #8:

http://www.garden.bsewall.com/topics/hardiness/zones.htm

Based on the average temperature that I have seen in our area, it looks like we are in between Hardiness Zones #8 and #9. Earlier this year in January, I recorded the temperature in my garden at 18 degrees F. (- 8 degrees C.). The record low for our area is 13 degrees F. (- 11 degrees C.). The normal extreme low temperatures are in the mid-20s F. each year, which would be Hardiness Zone #9.

Here is a good Resource for checking your Hardiness Zone (just enter your Zipcode):

http://www.plantmaps.com/95307

However, the Data Table for the Minimum and Maximum Temperature does NOT fit our area. I've recording minimum temperatures in the low 20s F. and mid 20s F. many days, and high temperatures in the high 90s F. many days, and this year we had around 10-12 days in the 100s F.

Arborday.org Hardiness Zone shows us in Hardiness Zone #9, which is similar to the southern-most states and north and central Florida.

We just plant and watch it grow... north Modesto has a great "Delta breeze" coming in from the Stockton area. It carries so much moisture... we can grow things here that people in Turlock struggle with in their gardens. So far we haven't found anything that won't grow!
Good Luck with your plantings
