This Dang Weather!
So, I caught the weather on Monday and it said to expect overnight temps of 31° F on Wednesday night. so yesterday I dug up my Bell-peppers and Chives and potted them in the greenhouse and removed the shade cloth from the roof, covered the toms and any thing else I hoped to save. I woke up this morning to 60s and a forecast projecting a high of 80° today and lows for the week in the mid 50s to mid to upper 40s.
Unfortunately cooler temps earlier in the week got my cukes and squash

The darn old weather can fool you.
I've been watching mine. It said 30F Sat and now its changed to 28 Fri instead. I already took in my peppers and hung them to ripen but will have to watch out for the herb pots that I'm keeping outside until the weather gets too cool for them. The eggplants have blossoms but I know they won't fruit. Much too cool here so I'll be adding them to the compost pile this week.

I feel the pain! High today is supposed to be 47F, with a few scattered 60's over the next 10-day forecast. We are on the steep downhill slide to winter and probably won't see anything in the 70's again until next May or June. Low of 25F tonight. Soon that will be considered a good high...

I feel for all of you, but I also realize now why I live in the south. Low here has been 48, with high today of 80. Most years, shorts are normal attire for Thanksgiving, but, may be too cold on Christmas.

We actually had our forecast amended to project 70 for the high today. Didn't make it.....

It was nice here today, I think we may have stolen a few degrees from you Goosegirl, lol. But we have already had almost 10 inches of snow too.

Hee hee. We've had a couple cool days, but most days lately have been in the 80s. Broccoli, cabbage, caulifoower, onions are growing like weeds. The Caribbean squash only made very few female blossoms (too much shade perhaps - darn that big pine on the neighbor's property), but there are three nice squashes growing and I hope they ripen.
About to dig my sweet potatoes in a couple weeks. Purple hull peas have done very well, and peppers continue to produce like crazy. Okra is slow this time of year, but still producing some. My carrots were reseeded three times, and still have only a smattering of plants. Beets are likewise doing poorly - gotta figure out what's wrong with them.

Wow, pollinator, your garden is booming! That's fantstic! I could send you some pine beetles to take care of that tree for you, lol, we have too many here.

My Egyptian onions and German Red garlic is growing crazy but I think it's all wrong to be growing fast at this time. Yesterday it was 78 degrees, yet the temps have also been daytime highs of 50's, and night time freezing marks too, sheesh. And yesterday I picked a large Quinalt strawberry. Nutty weather.

This is why I don't put my garlic in until the last week of October, we do not want too much foliage going into winter.llama momma wrote:My Egyptian onions and German Red garlic is growing crazy but I think it's all wrong to be growing fast at this time.
In other news, snow is on the way.

Camp - I know and I was torn..... but I was told to order early to get the desired variety and the best quality bulbs. Still, I knew I didn't have the recommended storage conditions for the bulbs. Everything I read said to keep them in a dry and cool place. So what do you do to successfully store bulbs without sprouting them till planting time?

The website I looked at said to store at 50 degrees and keep in dry conditions until ready to plant. My basement is far warmer than 50 degrees but maybe I should have kept the bulbs stored in nice dry peat in the basement? Today I counted 40 of 53 cloves that have sprouted. I'm not too happy about this.

Hmm...wonder if mine have sprouted inside the paper bulb. I just read that in my zone I can plant my shallots when I plant my garlic. It said to cover for winter with mulch, but be sure to remove the mulch in early spring to prevent rot.
