Mushroom Compost Empty Mushroom Compost

Not too long ago I read where someone was using mushroom compost as part of their MM. Is that a special compost or can a person go out and pick up mushroom and put in the compost pile. I am concerned with the spores that mushrooms have. I have picked up nearly a five gallon bucket out of my yard and they are still coming. Lived here 27 years and never saw such a growth of mushrooms. If I can use these mushrooms, how?

I would not use wild mushrooms in a home made compost.

When I lived in Upstate NY (quite a few years ago) we used mushroom compost (MC) from a local mushroom farm. The MC from that farm was just a mixture of assorted manure and other odds and ends, After a certain amount of growing mushrooms on the MC, the farm replaced the old with new. It then sold the old MC to local gardeners. It was a great supplement to mix into local soil and it was comparatively cheap compared to the compost sold in garden centers. If you can find some I think it would be worth the purchase. Just be prepared for the smell.

There are several brands of mushroom compost on the market. I personally like the one marketed by the Black Kow company, along with their black kow compost and black hen fertilizer/compost. These 3 are the work horses of my 5 blend.

Black Kow products are regional and not available in all areas. They have a search feature on their website you can use to see if it's available in your area.

What is the reason for not using wild mushrooms and the difference between the bought and wild?

Are you asking if you can add mushrooms to your compost pile? Mushrooms decompose just fine and are great to add to the compost pile. I've heard they are packed full of nitrogen.

mushroom compost is not made from mushroom. it's the lIeftover substrate mushroom growers used to grow the mushrooms. google mushroom compost for more information.
