FALLING LEAVES

This time last year I would never have believed that this year I would be looking forward to my annual collection of 30 to 40 bags of leaves that fall each year from my trees.

The difference? I now know what lovely compost I can make providing I use compost worms to help me.

I have learned so much from this forum, thank you all for sharing your knowledge with me.

Last year I procrastinated collecting the leaves in the fall, and that left me with the job to do in the spring and it was much, much, harder than it should have been.

So this year I have already gathered two bags of leaves and shredded them and added them to my new compost pile. I have also added two worm towers to which I am adding the usual kitchen scraps, and hoping to keep the compost pile warm enough to keep the worms alive.

I rake leaves out of corners, from around the base of shrubs and what not then pick them up with a power lawnmower with a bag attachment then dump it into the compost bin.

This is what I plan on trying this year. I have only one compost tumbler and a standing barrel, but I plan on layering my leaves on top of the beds to sit under the snow until spring. Wormies can do their work on them until then.

You can also make holes in your garden beds and stuff with dried fall leaves. The worms will have a feast thru the winter and the leaves will be compost by spring.
During late fall cleanup, when I pull out an old dead plant, I dig down a little deeper and put a trowelful or two of dead leaves in the resultant hole and cover with soil. The worms will thank you for it with castings in your soil next spring.

I have a large non sfg garden flower bed in the front of the house. I am going to try this method as I believe the soil have been depleted the last few years. And I have been saving cardboard which worms love too, going to bury both leaves and cardboard.
Got to encourage the worms!
