Hi all,
I stumbled upon an article about SFG on the internet about 3 months ago.
Now I'm no gardener, but I was intrigued, and I had to have a go.
I knocked up a couple of boxes out of single use shipping pallets, and we are harvesting already.
Three types of lettuce, bok choy, peas, and spinach, with carrots, beetroot, and tomatoes very nearly ready.

So easy, and no one I talk to has heard of SFG.

Have a problem with nut grass though, ten layers of news paper covered with weed mat doesn't even look like stopping it. It came through before my seeds.
I have just made another box with 120 x 20 mm pine boards for the bottom.
We'll see how that goes.

Great forum guys.
Cheers
Bob

Welcome to the official square foot gardening forum and congratulations on your upcoming first harvest!
1 - I hope the new bed you built with a wooden bottom has drainage holes.
And 2 - You can put the bed up on bricks or cinder blocks including the center for support and the weeds can weep : ) no longer able to reach your box.
3- Mel Bartholomew's book, All New Square Foot Gardening, is the updated source for this wonderful way of gardening, a must have!
And again Welcome!

Hi Bob! Welcome to the SFG forum.

I have the same issue as your nut grass problem but with
Star of Bethlehem. the way I finely resolved the problem was
to put a square of plastic under the box with about a two inch
flap around the out side the box can still drain but the weeds
can not come up through the bottom.

Welcome Bob!
When you have the chance, browse around the site. On the tab for the "home" page you will find the "international" section down the page. Australia is there and you may be able to connect with others from your neck of the woods.

If you are searching for a topic, check out the "search" feature in the upper left hand corner of this page. And if you also like to post pics of your gardens that is pretty easy to do also once you get the hang of it.

Don't hesitate to ask a question if you can't find an answer...everyone on here is a great help.

Happy Gardening!

Welcome to the forum, glad you found us! I know there is another user Ericam here that is also from Australia. I am a little jealous of you guys just getting started as my season comes to an end Sad so I will just have to garden vicariously through you two! Keep us posted on the progress and have fun!

Hi Bob, glad you\'re here glad to have another Aussie on board, I was starting to feel a bit lonely in the Aussie section of the forum!

This is my first year of SFGing, first year with veggies too so lots to learn but these guys are a great bunch, very helpful so I'm sure we can keep them busy answering questions about our gardens whilst they are staring at snow. Laughing

Ahem...only SOME of the US gardeners will be staring at snow. Our "winter" in the South consists of a cold day now and then during December through February, and snow is rare in the deep South.

We garden four seasons of the year.

But I'm glad to see Aussies on here as well. I certainly would love to visit your land.

I know, but I just couldn't resist the tease since there have been a few people commenting how they are jealous of my growing season getting going whilst theirs is finishing! Wink

Sounds like your winters are very similar to mine, my winter garden didn't do as well as I would have liked but that's because I discovered it gets way less sun than I thought it would. Too many fences and trees, the angles just didn't work.

I certainly would love to visit your land.

If you ever get the chance, do it, it is a long way to come but it is a beautiful country with lots to see.
