in my garden, lettuce grows under the cucumber trellis, radishes grow around the beans which grow up their cage.

I found that to be a pretty interesting topic when Mel posted it. I guess mainly because here on the forum, that's a pretty common practice, and has been discussed quite a few time.
Like you nycquilter, I plant radish and lettuce in all kinds of little nooks and crannies, and cooler shaded areas.

This year breakfast radish and shallots went into the same bed, radish harvested, then shallots harvested, then put in late sweet peppers and broccoli starts that had been holding in pots.

I put 4 strawberry runner babies around a Fordhook Giant swiss chard. When I pull up the chard by winter the strawberries can have the square all to themselves.

i intermix planting regularly, both for best use of space and also for companion benefits. usually a square will only have single specimens during that crop's main growing season--during the beginning and end of that plant's season it will be sharing the space, either with something coming up or with something going out.

Well before I had ever heard of SFG, I interplanted but under the concept of Companion Planting. I like doing so in the SFG is just a logical progression. Lettuce is so happy to grow with any number of plants that will shade it. I've never done much with radishes, but that's a good idea.
