Before H. Isaac arrives..
Instead of covering last autumns compost heap, I spent a couple hours hand sifting compost into containers, ahead of hurricane Isaac's first remnants this afternoon. Discovered roots that found their way into the bottom of the pile, stealing good nutrients. Felt kinda good to chop them up and add them to a new pile.
So here's a picture of my black gold after spring/summer/and most of fall planting. Side note, have a total of 80 squares in my sf garden. This could possibly be the same feeling folks get when they complete a season's worth of canning.

Re: Before H. Isaac arrives..
Oh yes, love my kitties.
Been saving kitty litter containers for a year or so. Three cats use litter in the winter. Have one elderly house cat. In winter only we give the two barn cats a litter box inside the llama barn. They can stay snuggled up in the loft and have a litter box nearby. Llama poo/urine is tame smelling stuff, but cat wastes are nasty so I'm pleased the barn cat girls use the litter box in the winter and go outside in the summer.

Re: Before H. Isaac arrives..
Sorry I wasn't clear, answer is total of 3 cats. You have a lot of cats oh my! Mine are all rescues, one is from the humane society and 2 from my vet clinic that places kitties into homes. Lucky for them they all have good eyes. They are quite interesting individuals as you know and certainly have a place in my heart. At first I felt a little bad making the barn cats stay outside but they sure keep down vermin and the veterinarian swears they have far more fun compared to house cats. They adapted to Ohio weather extremes and they certainly are street-wise and handle themselves real well with all kinds of wildlife and the llamas.larry wrote:**** Side trip post *****

I love the kitty in your avatar Larry, which one is that?
I've only got the one cat and she's a Russian Blue called Vela. We've had her for nearly 11 years now and I just love her to bits.

We have had three cats in our lives and we were adopted by them.

I love all these kitties! And I just couldn't let this thread go by with out my Lilly being included. She's my constant gardening companion - talks to me the whole time we're out there. She chases any critters, including other cats, dogs, turkeys, foxes & geese right off the property. She stops at the property line, turns around quite satisfied with herself and then comes back to my side.

Those are Very unique markings. Love It. She looks like there was some kind of seal point and tabby in her background that turned orange?? Never ever saw markings and colors like that. Ok I'll take her, just kidding.

Right on! She's an apple-head Siamese. When their points are striped like that they call it Lynx point. So she's a flame/lynx point rescue kitty, rejected by a breeder who breeds Himalayans. I had her brother, too, who was a full seal point, but I think either someone stole him or the coyotes got him last year. He was very friendly, but fortunately she's quite wary of strangers.

I'm not really a cat person, but we had a part siamese one time. I had a sign posted on the windows of the doors. This house guarded by THE PROTECTIVE ORDER OF ATTACT CATS!

Re: Before H. Isaac arrives..
I think the funniest thing I ever saw with my cats was a tag team! I had an old pair, ragdoll male - long hair ??? female. The male was declawed in front. He would sit in the middle of the road doing a stand off with a stray. She would come up behind and attack! Yup, best team work I ever saw. Sam died of cancer at 12 yrs old. Stormy lived a sad life for another 4 yrs to pass at 16. She really missed Samuel T Catamus. I had had them since they were 2 and 5 ...
