Pumpkin Plants - what is wrong? Empty Pumpkin Plants - what is wrong?

Post  Dunkinjean 8/29/2012, 10:59 pm

I everyone!
For the past 3 yrs I have been growing pumpkin plants with no problems. This year my plants seem to have powdery mildew (see pics and have been removing affected leaves) along with no chance of pollination. I normally self-pollinate but there have been so few female flowers if any at all! I am thinking that at this time I should pull out the pumpkin plants and destroy. Sad
What would you suggest?
Tks for your time.

My cantaloupe did the same thing. Don't have a clue what caused it.

Looks like my cucs. I was told on the forum somewhere that it was probably a deficiency in the soil, so I added more compost and watered with Epsom salts. They are struggling but still fruiting.

Looks like more than one problem. I can see powdery mildew, but it doesn't look that bad.

You say there are few flowers. Check the buds that are obviously dead to see of there's a little hole in them. Are the leaves that are dying, adjacent to the ones with dead buds? Remove them and slit the stems and the buds themselves. If there is frass, you have pickleworm

Pickleworm is really, really bad in the South this year, and it tends to move north through the summer, so you could also have it in the northeast by now.

The pickleworm moth lays its eggs on the buds during the night; they hatch and chew their way into the bud, killing it, then work their way down the stem, killing the leaf.

These are as bad as squash borers, but they start at different points. The SBs always go for the base of the plant.
