Ciao, tutti Smile

Here is an update on my little garden. I've just replanted some squares for Fall but my Summer stuff is starting to finally give me something to harvest. All this heat has sure made things challenging but still fun!! Alas, my yellow squash could not overcome the squash borer. I had a bunch of squash that had been fertilized, but after a few days, the tips turned black and they fell off. Drat!!
As an experiement, I planted sugar snap peas a while ago. As one can see, they look awful, but surprisingly they are producing some peas!! Sorry the cages are on but I had just hauled them back on before I rememered I wanted to take pictures!

Here is my cherry tomato plant and my bucket of corn that I'm not confident will actually produce corn but it's a nice looking plant anyways What a Face

My niece and nephew proudly displaying the teeny tiny beets we pulled last week (although I think my nephew is more proud of his fake "tattoo" than the beets):

Looks nice! And I'm so glad you are involving the kids!

As to your squash turning black at the blossom end, you have inadequate pollination - not enough grains of pollen delivered for the squash to go on to maturity.

Bee populations are so low in many areas (mostly due to pesticides) that this has become a very common problem. Here's more details: http://gardensouth.org/2011/06/15/evaluating-squash-pollination/

congrats...beets love the cooler weather so this summer was tough. I picked a ton of beets a few months ago and just topped off some of my now empty squares with compost to get for another round of fall planting.
