Try your local county cooperative extension service Agriculture office.

I believe that's Fritillary butterfly caterpillar. Not sure which one though, might be Variegated or Meadow. Search for Fritillary on bugguide.net.

I did find this: http://www.butterfliesandmoths.org/species/Euptoieta-claudia

That is where I am leaning towards too. I think I am going to leave them alone and see what happens. I have two vines and they both have them on them. Maybe I will get to see a lot of butterflies!!

My vote goes for Variegated Frit. We have Gulf Frits on our passion fruit each year and raise a lot of adults. Some years they strip all the foliage, but lately the wasps have been severely reducing their numbers. I guess that's the trade-off for having them clean out the tomato worms.

try again bugguide.net doesnt have it Empty fritillary butterfly

Post  memart1 8/8/2012, 7:19 pm

I had a lot of those butterflies around the marigolds that border my garden. My niece, who is an environmental educator, took some beautiful pictures of them. When she put the pics on facebook, I learned what they were. I did not see any caterpillars, but did find a total of four hornworms all year, and three of those had the white wasp larvae on them. I have about 16 squares of various tomatoes in my 2-1/2' x 26' garden. I also have eggplant, peppers, pole beans, bush beans, spaghetti squash, cucumbers, and zucchini. I take it that these fritillary butterflies are nothing to be concerned about, or am I wrong about that?
