Canning party suggestions? Empty Canning party suggestions?

Post  JustMe on 8/3/2012, 11:23 pm

In September, I'd like to have friends over for a canning party. I've been really enjoying learning how to can this season, and a few friends have expressed interest but are hesitant to go at it alone.

Would canning applesauce and tomato sauce w/a break between for lunch be reasonable? (I've made applesauce before w/o the canning but never made tomato sauce.) I figured we could can quarts of applesauce and pints of tomato sauce. Apples and tomatoes will be in season and are staples that everyone would eat.

I was thinking 4 total people. Any suggestions about division of labor?

What should guests bring if they have it? Apple corer/slicer, ladle? We have a food mill. Would a food processor help for tomatoes? (Not sure if my friends have one.)

Would a second Ball canning kit (lifter, funnel, etc.) be helpful?

Would it be easier for me to pick the jars, produce, etc. everything up before hand?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

there is not single way to do it right, it just depends on your needs and resources. here are some links with ideas on several different ways to do it, these should give you some inspiration for how to make it work well for your situation.

canning across america:

taste of home:

ball canning jar company:

backwoods home magazine guide for outdoor canning parties:

now my personal thoughts:

you're the host. you're going to the trouble of setting it up and making all the arrangements. one of the perks of that kind of effort is that you get to set the parameters, and one of them needs to be making it as easy as possible for YOU. otherwise, you'll get overwhelmed and discouraged and the tone of the event will reflect that. if you don't want to bother getting all the supplies for the party, don't! just let the guests know what they need to bring, be specific, and let them know what you ARE planning to provide. if on the other hand, you prefer to make sure everybody is working with a specific set of supplies and ingredients, then by all means take care of that end of it, and let the guests know what you need from them in return (chipping in to cover costs, for example).

good luck! i believe this is one of the funner types of parties and i hope you end up having a blast.
