Gargantuan Predator & Misc other Foes!
Ok this has to be the BIGGEST horn worm I have ever seen:
I don't know if you can tell from the picture but it actually measured over 4"!!! I don't know how I missed it. But here is the amount of damage it did just since this morning!
I have been finding lots of little green grasshoppers and in the past have just caught them and let them go elsewhere. Well, I have had about enough of these bugs eating my precious veggies. I caught the little guy and put it in a container of water. I held it under the water for a little while and then took my hand away. The little booger swam to the top! WHAT? It was about to hop out but I caught it again. This time I sort of anchored it down. My husband says he's afraid of how violent I've become. LOL. Ok one more thing. I also found this little guy. Is it friend or foe?

The little spider is a friend. The horn worm not so much, but the moth is a beautiful creature. If you find a horn worm with white egg cases on it, pick it off the tomato and take it to the other side of the yard, the eggs will hatch and give you more parasitic braconid wasps!

I have never seen one this big either. Makes one wonder if this current weather we have been having has anything to do with this.

SHEESH that is BIG
I am sure glad I live in the great white north where all I have to worry about are grizzly bears.
That thing almost looks a bit like a cartoon character.

EEEWWWWW. I don't think I could have touched it, much less picked it up to drown it. You are one brave woman. And I definitely couldn't count on my husband to help--I'm the one who disposes of dead mice.

yeck! I pruned my mammoth tomato plant yesterday, and found tiny "poops". I was so skittish about reaching in and finding one of those worms! I'm pretty "tough" but I HATE those things!! gives me the heebie jeebies!!

I thought I had read that we should just let them be on the branch since those wasps will kill other horn worms once they hatch?? The one I found hasn't moved in 3 days since it is covered with them.

If the worm hasn't moved and there are egg cases on the back... it's probably dead and the wasp larvae are doing their job. It will fall off eventually.... going back to the Earth...
If I find them alive and kicking on my tomatoes, peppers and especially my eggplants, they get picked off pronto... they have HUGE appetites.

They don't bite, but they do squirm and are surprisingly muscular.

Gargantuan Predator
Several years ago, I noticed that something had taken bites out of a couple of tomatoes. Upon closer inspection, I discovered a giant, 4" hornworm, removed it, placed it on a paper towel, measured and photographed it, then sprayed it with organic pesticide. Didn't work! Finally, I had to toss it into the trash bin. (It was too big to squish without my becoming squeemish.)
Since then, I've planted borage in my garden and have seen very few hornworms, all of them quite small.

What is borage? My husband picked one off for me, started to squeeze and it "bled" green (or it went pee)....

Re: Gargantuan Predator & Misc other Foes!
Borage is a flowering herb, rather attractive, and supposedly edible. It's also quite invasive, so if you need more than one or two plants, immediately pull out any seedlings you see (they look pretty much luck cucumber seedlings at first).
