Question on Scallion spacing
I read on a website yesterday that scallions could be thinned to every 2 inches. Does that mean you could put 32 in a square instead of 16? Is the 16/square in the book for regular onions? Probably a silly question, but still.....

Re: Question on Scallion spacing
I plant mine so that I don't have to thin them. So 16 per square. Altho they haven't sprouted yet...

Re: Question on Scallion spacing
I don't know the answer to your question, but I was wondering if you found a packet of seeds called scallions or if they are called bunching onions. I thought I had scallions (looked like it in the picture) but then just before planting I noticed they are bunching onions.

cebolla
Evergreen long white bunching onions
bottom note says mild scallion flavor
In a word.... yes
I'm still putting them at 16, but I have a suspicion you could put them closer and just be very careful harvesting. I use a knife in a circle around the bulb to "cut" the roots even now so harvesting doesn't disturb the surrounding onions.

Re: Question on Scallion spacing
Ok I need some clarification here. What is the difference between green onions, bunching onions, scallions and chives?

I don't think chives are in the same family as the others mentioned.
Green onions I believe are the same as scallions but how they are different from bunching onions is a mystery.

Re: Question on Scallion spacing
Chives are onion flavored and look kind of like grass, right? That's what I'm growing. My bunching onions haven't come up yet but the packet looks like scallions to me.

Re: Question on Scallion spacing
Bunching onions are like green onions and scallions. The reason they call them bunching onions is because they don't form a bulb. They are all aliums (including chives).

Re: Question on Scallion spacing
Green onions=bunching onions=scallions (aka salad onions; often served as a appetizer with a side of salt; long thin greens with a white ball on the end)songstriss wrote:Ok I need some clarification here. What is the difference between green onions, bunching onions, scallions and chives?
Chives are classed as an herb. They come in garlic and onion flavor. They are very thin grass-like greens when they start sprouting. They do gain thickness, but not as much as a scallion.
People often use the tops of scallions or regular onions for chives.
That said, my scallions and chives have done miserable this year! I will replant in fall when my weather is more like yours (they went in about March). Shallots haven't done anything either. They looked good this winter and spring, but now are dying back and there is nothing to speak of in the ground.
I did get one ball about 1/8" wide! Woo Hoo!!!
