I need help on how to grow zucchini. I know everybody can grow zucchini, but me. I have planted it in my squarefoot garden for years, then come the middle of the summer bugs or disease get it. I usually plant it on the corner of a box, so it can flop over the side onto a path. I have tried several different varieties of squashes. The best success I have had is with the vining zucchini (and even one year that plant died.)
The first pest that attacks are cut worms. I have fixed that problem with more mature plants, paper cup collars or toothpicks on either side of the stem. I feel like I might have won that battle.
The next pest that attacks are squash bugs. A penny a bug and 10 cents for eggs, has come a long way to fixing that problem, plus I use soapy water or just squish the bugs. I have not won that battle, some years are worse than others.
The battle that I cannot win is the squash vine bore. I usually to do not see the bug until it is too late. I know that you are supposed to be able to slit the stem and kill the bug, then bury the stem in compost. Very low success rate with that method. My vining zucchini plant seems to do better, because it will root further along the stem, somewhere in my path. Any of my other trellised squashes have died quick and painful deaths leaving behind orphaned unripe squash. This year I will try to replant and hope for the best.
I guess what I am asking is for more ideas on what to try, before I try to plant squash in the soil.

Start early, weekly spraying with bt and innoculate the lower stems with bt using a hyperdermic needle and liquid bt. Read this somewhere else and have my son trying it on a second crop.
