How do you space leaf lettuce? Empty How do you space leaf lettuce?

Post  CPN on 4/11/2010, 9:10 pm

I have never grown in lettuce in the south... head or leaf type. I have what the seed packet calls loose-leaved lettuce (Salad Bowl). The SFG says plant lettuce 4 to a square foot. Seems like I could get more of a leaf lettuce in one square being as they want form heads??? Any one growing or have grown leaf lettuce please help.

Thanks,
CPN

How do you space leaf lettuce? Empty stick with 4

Post  SirTravers on 4/11/2010, 9:15 pm

I've got a small crop of 8 butternut leaf lettuce plants in my garden. They started as a tray of 9 small seedlings. I started them in one square on March 18th. They finally got big enough they were all touching except for one I lost. I decided to transplant the leftovers into the 4 per square pattern and they are already filling in the empty spaces. Seems to me the leaf lettuce would actually take up a bit more room than the head lettuce since it's not trying to ball up.

You could do 5 per square - like the five on a dice. I only grow leaf lettuce and since I like it I try to get one extra plant per square. I've never had any problems planting 5/per.

Thanks Tim. That is what I was thinking I would do. Plant it like a 5 dice. Funny.

Well, I do it differently if planting directly from seed. I scatter the seed very thinly and then when the plants are 2-3" tall, thin to 4 per square. The thinnings are wonderful. When they start getting too crowded, I might take out another whole plant, until I end up with just one. When transplanting I start with 9, then thin as needed.

Can I plant 8 or 9 like belfrybat suggests, and then just keep snipping outer leaves to eat, and keep the plants small?

I do the 5 like a die setup and that works the best for me. Even with snipping nightly for a salad bowl, once they really get going they are crowded with 5. 9 seems like a lot for one square and I do start snipping as soon as i possibly can. That being said, I only snip enough of the outer leaves for 2 people, so maybe if you were feeding a larger family you could squeeze in more plants and snip often.

I only grow loose leaf lettuce types, with the exeception of butter head which i treat like a looseleaf and cut the other leaves.

Yes, for a while, but eventually no matter how much you cut the outer leaves, the heart of the plant will get too large. But thanks to this marvoulous SFG method, just begin taking out some of the plants until you end up with the number that fills the square.

Good point belfrybat,
I did this with my squash. I planted a pinch of seeds in the hole just like Mel says in the book. They sprouted in one location (all three seeds) but not in the other. Thanks to the Mel's Mix, I was easily able to relocate the seedlings that sprouted to the squares where none sprouted.

I have planted my loose leaf head lettuce(simpson), romaine, and butter crunch in the four per square method and these are all doing well. I also planted a mesculin mix, arugula, and some other leaf lettuces but not necessarily according to spacing since i plan to harvest these from microgreens to full grown. As I remove micros and smaller plants i will harvest towards creating correct spacing.
