Planting Dill
Had someone tell me to be careful planting dill in my sfg as it will take over. Is that true?

If allowed to go to seed, then yes. Same with Basil and cilantro.

Re: Planting Dill
I plant dill in my sfg and it grows nicely... Mine usually tops out at 5.5 to 6 ft tall... So beware of the shade factor.
I think dill is such a beautiful thing to grow....

Re: Planting Dill
Dill is suppposed to reseed heavily...I had two plants last year (tiger swallowtail butterflies love it)...and so far this year I only see two new seedlings, although they are in an aggressive flower bed, not in the SFG.

Save some of those seed heads - dill seed is delicious! Tastes totally different than the foliage. I have a recipe for zucchini casserole that has dill seeds and it is wonderful!

I do have a few pics but I have a new iPad and haven't figured out how to post pics now. I'll try to post if I ever figure it out! I just pulled up the dill after harvesting all the heads for pickles. Love me some dill!

Re: Planting Dill
We're happy to have dill reseed, if it's growing somewhere you don't want it, it's very easy to pull out. I have a little inexpensive food dehydrator and herbs dried at home taste light years better than those you find in the supermarket.

Re: Planting Dill
So question: I never have enough dill. If I thin it down to one plant, and put one in at a time, it ends up being just a weeny dill plant that I don’t get enough leaves from (love the leaves, plus it’s expensive to buy!!!).
Can I plant a small clump of 2 or 3 plants to bulk up the leaf power? How do I get more leaves? I grow it in containers on my patio near the kitchen door....
Help!

Re: Planting Dill
I have dill that grows "wild" in the Butterfly Garden, and there is more of it every year. One thing I notice where there is a clump of plants is that there are only leaves on the outside area of the plants - if two plants are together, leaves will grow on the outside of each, but there will not be any leaves where the two plants grow together.
Dill has a very deep root (carrot family), and will be stunted if it cannot develop a deep tap root. Are your containers deep enough to allow the long tap root? The soil level has to be at least 12" deep, and deeper if possible.
