Re: Strawberry 'marathon' runner
I looked yesterday and I don't have any of those on mine. Are there some strawberry plants that don't make runners?

I don't know for sure. We'll have to wait for the experienced ones to answer.

Re: Strawberry 'marathon' runner
I have some strawberry plants (don't know variety) that don't make runners. Instead, the crown either divides or makes another crown, with a new plant. The plant looks like it's real bushy/healthy, but if you dig or look closely there is more than 1 plant in that spot. I ended up with beautiful plants, lots of berries, and it looks like I planted 8 per square!

CC -- from what I can gather from other posts, mature plants make runners, but not always.
llittlejo - your post came to mind yesterday when i noticed some plants have multiplied just as you described, seemingly right at the crown. Which confuses me (happens esily) I thought only runners produced new plants. Perhaps a runner didn't run but went straight down and grew a new crown? I don't know, again confused.

Re: Strawberry 'marathon' runner
apparently the ever bearing strawberries send out LOTS of runners and the june bearing strawberries do not, but make for better strawberries.
This is how I have been differentiating my plants as most of them were gifts.

Re: Strawberry 'marathon' runner
I planted some Sequoia strawberries (everbearing) in early May in a cement mixing tub and although they tried to flower, I didn't let them. Now they're sending runners all over the tub and there are at least 6 or 7 new plants. I started with 3. Eventually the tub will be full of plants, I hope!

Re: Strawberry 'marathon' runner
I'm sorry now that I didn't keep up with the names of these plants. I have some that supposed to be June bearing, and some that are everbearing, don't know which is which, but some are still blooming, so maybe they are the everbearing?
I moved about a third of them into the pyramid and some had 'developed' a second crown. Some of my plants have decided to make runners.
I also ordered 12 King Kong strawberries. They came, 5 bloomed but the berries are no bigger that the plants I already had.
I will have way too many plant for the 2 pyramids, any one need strawberry plants?
I will have to see if the ones that made extra crown, will put out runners or not.

I thought I read somewhere that if you cut the ever bearers they would put more energy into strawbs and then of course you can replant the runners...??thoughts
