radishes & beets not doing well
For the third year in a row I can't get radishes, beets, or spinach to grow (Boston). Do root vegetables just not work in 6" of soil? Also, my lettuce and arugula do well, but I cant grow spinach for some reason.
Any suggestions?

I could grow radishes and spinach last year without trying...neither did well this year. Radish greens were about 1/2 the normal size with very little bulb production. Spinach germinated but did not show even an ounce of growth. My beets did rather well (I've posted pics)...they like plenty of water and I mixed in some wood ash for additional phosphorus.

I had the same problem last year. I added alot more compost(two trowels full) to the square I was planting for radish and beets. Much better this year.

Try a top dressing of homemade compost with a few handfulls of bonemeal sprinkled in the bed. Take care with keeping even watering.
