New gardner from IL

Thank you Mel for your book. I bought it few weeks back (didn't finish it yet) and I already start to built my SFG (bought all the wood).
Mine will be 3'*16'*6-8" (or 2 lots of 3*7').
If you don't mind I would like to ask a question for now.
I bought some Miracle Grow for veggies, cow manure and peat moss. Do I have to mix in your special mix (1/3 of the 3 ingredients) or I'm ok for now? Just add when I pick the veggies?

By the way. Never had time or inclination for gardening but I love tomatoes from my yard (My wife plants them. She has some health problems and I want to help). Your way is the best way and I can show her that old dogs CAN learn new tricks.

Hi Michael. Welcome to SFG and the Forum. I think the majority of the SFG'ers here will attest that the key to SFG is making the Mel's Mix "by the book" with 1/3 blended compost, 1/3 coarse vermiculite, 1/3 peat moss. Those who tend have problems with SFG are usually the ones who cut corners when making their mix. Do it right from the beginning and you won't have to worry about it. Smile

Welocme to the SFG froum! I'm from Illinois too.

I have to agree with Tim, it's best to stay true to Mel's mix to avoid any disappointments.

Be sure to keep us up to date on what your going to plant, and share pictures if you can!

I'll go to Menard later today and get some more compost and hope I'll find some Vermiculite.

Michael:

To the SFG way of gardening and to our forum. You mentioned that your wife has health problems. If she has diffulicity in bending and getting down on her knees you might consider building her a SFG that is at Table Top (TT) height. I have several and it really helps not to have to be on my knees to garden.
