they should do fine! i plant many things in buckets--i use kitty litter buckets, since we buy a lot of kitty litter and they are free--right now i have in buckets tomatillos, cabbage, cauliflower, artichokes, and columnar apple trees!

The bucket brigades. Strung, caged determanents, and portable with PVC poles.

better view of the poles and cages.

Re: planting in bucket
that is cool, also the fish.....however everyone here says if I do that, I will DEFINATELY get bears.... even if buried.
I just cannot picture a zucchini or pumpkin in a bucket, how do they flow over the edges?
Or do you grow the zucchinis up a pole??

I put them up on a rock slope and just let them flow over the edges. Pumpkins and gourds are just ornamental for me so I don't care if they flop all over the ground. I could not tell you anything about zucchini in a bucket though. I don't like them but I have a customer at work that wants some zukes so maybe I will suprise her next year!
We don't have bears here, just mountain lions, and I really didn't put a fish in the buckets, it was a joke because of the fish in my tumbler.

Well the thing here is that where is live is home to the worlds largest salmon run, people come from everywhere to see them spawn in the adams river.

The summer before last the numbers were higher than ever recorded, and of course after the fish spawn, they die and go down the river
The lake shore was COVERED with dead fish.
SO some people in the area DID plant them in their gardens and lo and behold, the bears dug them up.... Goodness sakes, big mistake

Re: planting in bucket
I cheated and put my buckets next to a cattle panel trellis.

Tomatos, watermelons and cantaloupes will fight it out if they meet at the top.

Bears and Bees
I used to have two hives of bees -- That is until the bear decided it would like them!! That was many years ago and four miles from where I live now. Raising bees again is something I've thought about.
Re: planting in bucket
I had my buckets last year alongside my cattle panels and used the highest part to tie the strings to, looks like quite a mess, but was an incredibly productive plant. I had hoped to take it inside when it got cold, but it ws too entwined by then. These are San Marzanos

Rose, be sure to throw some rocks in the bottom of your bucket so the crack stays open!

gee thanks....GWN, I went and bought a zuke and planted it in a bucket just for you, I will take pics and keep you posted to see how it works!

I would try the same thing with zucchinis but I think I already have passed the zucchini MAX amount..... (you can only plant enough zucchinis that you have friends to pawn them off on

Truly I make all kinds of things with zucchinis and grade them and freeze them for winter baking.
zucchini cakes, zucchini muffins etc etc........

Re: planting in bucket
I do not think so, zukes are resilient.Do I need to do anything to "protect" the open stem?
Someone posted a video here that showed a guy pruning a zucchini to grow up a stake and basically what he did was to cut off all the leaves below the lowest flower/fruit
