Non-stop rain and my mix
Hello all. Big SFG fan here and I have a question about the none stop rain we have been getting here in North Idaho. Will it deplete all the nutrients out of my soil? Seems to me this Mel's mix is like coffee grounds, the more water you dump over it the less "rich" it is. It's early in the growing season here and I have plants just popping up. Should I top dress the boxes or just not worry about it?

It is probable. If you are beginning to see signs of nutrient deficiency go ahead and topdress with fresh, homemade compost, that will give everything a boost.

Of course, nutrient loss is not something limited only to Mel's Mix - it will happen with any growing medium. The great thing about the SFG system is the added trowelful of compost to replenish those nutrients between plantings. I see your concern is whether your current plantings will have enough nutrients left to grow and produce and for that, let the plants tell you - no need to be proactive. As camprn said, if you see signs of nutrient deficiency, then you can topdress with some fresh compost.
