Hello,

I'm Lynda from Jurupa Valley, CA (Riverside). I just built my SFG boxes and got them started with some seeds and some transplants that I had started prior to making my boxes.

I'm still reading the SFG book and so far am very pleased with the way this garden is going! It has been pretty easy other than leveling out a spot to start out with.

Unfortunetly, I didn't start out with Mels Mix, I got the book after I had went to a local nursery and got their vegetable growing mix. I'm now eager to switch to Mels mix, down the road.

I am kind of stumped on how to add a trellis for my climbing items when I have the top of my boxes enclosed with chicken wire to keep out rabbits, squirrels, birds, goats and sheep. I'm thinking I'm going to have to remove the top wire of them, since I'm going to need to put the trellis in soon. Any input from other would be greatly appreciated.

Looking forward to reading other post and learning more!Very Happy

Just got my SFG Started in So. Cal 396615 neighbor. I'm Linda from Bloomington, just north of you.

I have wire on the bottoms of all 4 of my beds to keep the gophers out and my garden is fenced in with hog panels to keep the dogs & goats out. We have squirrels & rabbits but they haven't been too much of a problem. My trellises are also mostly stock panels supported with T posts.

Again welcome.

I put the wire on the bottom of my 4 boxes to keep out rabbits, squirrels and gophers too. I'm going to look into the hog panels. Right now I have them covered with a pvc frame with chicken wire on them and they are hinged so I can open the top. This is not going to work for long because I need to put a trellis in for my climbing plants.

I was just in Bloomington yesterday, thanks for the welcome and the tips!

Interesting problem. However, I always made my trellises independent of the box. On either side of the north side, I put in two of the U fence posts. Then I attached PVC pipe and netting. Although that may not be your issue.

Having the chicken wire over the box would protect the seedlings and discourage critters but would not be useful in the long run as plants get taller. If they grow through the chicken wire you have a heck of a mess later on and you cannot harvest and replant square by square. Hmmmm. Can you fence the area around the boxes? I know many people do. Again a one time expense and a lot of work.

And maybe I am not visualizing this correctly. Can you post a picture? What I do know is rabbits and squirrels do not care about our problems and can really be pains.
